Labour Day weekend 2005 saw what was to be the largest Flower show in Nova Scotia and the largest Dahlia Show in Canada, take place at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel in Halifax. Over 2,000 blooms of all sizes, shapes and colours, filled the large ballroom from one end to the other, and saw blooms from as far away as Philadelphia and Rhode Island put on the show bench for viewing. Judging took place Saturday morning and the display was opened to public viewing in the afternoon and all day Sunday. A steady flow of visitors kept the ballroom full, including a few bus tours from garden clubs. Exhibited quality blooms that were not used for competition were put on display as one of the delegates from Maryland created a 7 ft tall by 5 ft wide mass display containing over 250 blooms.
The Dahlia Show and Conference was hosted by the Dahlia Society of Nova Scotia and was the official National Dahlia Show of the American Dahlia Society for 2005. The 150 delegates attending were from all over North America; Ohio, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, Maine, Rhode Island, California, Connecticut, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, just to name some of the states and provinces. There was even a delegate from Australia. The 5 day conference was packed with tours, meetings, sightseeing on the harbour and lots of dahliatalk about growing and showing dahlias. The Dahlia Society of Nova Scotia was honored to host such an event and hope that all our visitors went back home with fond memories of their visit with us.
